Multimedia, History, and Strings: An Evening with Amorsima Trio
At Blackerby Violin Shop, we are constantly inspired by artists who push the boundaries of what string instruments can do. This week, we are shining a light on a performance that promises to be as much of a visual journey as an auditory one.
On Saturday, April 18, the Austin-based Amorsima Trio will take the stage for an evening of adventurous new music that explores everything from the history of our city to the quiet landscapes of West Texas.
Redefining the String Trio
The name "Amorsima" means "that which does not come from fate." It’s a fitting title for an ensemble—Mia Detwiler (violin), Mike Capone (viola), and Kourtney Newton (cello)—dedicated to carving their own path. Since 2016, they have bypassed traditional expectations to focus on commissioning new works and collaborating with the most innovative composers of our time.
A Love Letter to Austin: The World Premiere
The centerpiece of the evening is the world premiere of How Are You?, a multimedia work by Austin composer Stephan Arce-Penedo.
This isn't your typical string trio piece. It is a sonic and visual homage to Austin, combining:
Historic video footage and audio from the 20th and 21st centuries.
Electronic sounds.
Live performance by the trio.
Stephan, a Panamanian immigrant and Austin educator, uses his unique perspective to explore identity and modern life, making this premiere a must-see for anyone who loves the history and evolution of our city.
Sonic Portraits of Texas and Beyond
The program travels even further, featuring works like Alan Mackwell’s Remains of a Permian Gas Station—a "sonic portrait" of an abandoned station in West Texas—and Missy Mazzoli’s Lies You Can Believe In, which captures the energy of "urban folk music." With additional music by Mario Lavista, Giovanni Sollima, and others, the night will be a masterclass in contemporary string performance.
