A Spotlight on Texas Cellos at UT
At Blackerby Violin Shop, we see instruments as more than just wood and wire; they are the vessels for community and expression. This month, we are thrilled to spotlight Texas Cellos at UT Austin, a student organization that is proving you don't have to be a music major to make world-class music.
From a Few Friends to a "Cello Choir"
What started as a handful of students from the UT University Orchestra meeting up to sight-read music in their free time has blossomed. In just three years, Texas Cellos has grown into an official student organization with over 20 members across all majors and years.
But why a "Cello Choir"?
The cello is unique because its range is the most similar to the human voice. A cello ensemble can span the entire pitch range of a full string orchestra while maintaining a perfectly blended, resonant, and rich color. Because the instrument is so versatile, this group doesn't box themselves in; they play everything from Tchaikovsky and Baroque classics to Jazz, Rock, and even Wii Music.
More Than Just a Major
One of the most inspiring things about Texas Cellos is that the vast majority of their members are STEM students (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math). For these students, the ensemble is a vital artistic outlet.
"I thought I would never play cello again after high school and I’m so grateful for having the opportunity to continue playing with other cellists." — 3rd Year Chemistry Major
Whether it's a Masters student in Electrical Engineering or a Psychology major, the common thread is a mutual love for the instrument and the community it creates.
Join the Magic: Upcoming Free Concerts
Texas Cellos is on a mission to spread joy and make classical music accessible to the greater Austin community. Their upcoming performances will feature a blend of traditional classical music (like Tchaikovsky’s Serenade for Strings) and familiar favorites from films like Pirates of the Caribbean, The Notebook, and The Little Mermaid.
Catch them live (Admission is FREE!):
April 14th: All Saints’ Episcopal Church @ 7:00 PM
April 28th: Jessen Auditorium at UT Austin @ 7:00 PM
A Note for Aspiring Musicians
The members of Texas Cellos have some parting advice for young players: Don't skip the fundamentals. Practicing your scales is what enables you to be great, but finding the joy in playing is what keeps you motivated. Immerse yourself in the world of music—listen to it, go to the symphony, and find your community.
Blackerby Violin Shop is proud to provide a platform for groups like Texas Cellos. We hope to see you at their upcoming shows!
